Samsung to Hold Event on August 7 to Unveil Galaxy Note 10

Samsung yesterday announced plans to hold an event on Wednesday, August 7 in New York City, where it will unveil the next-generation Galaxy Note device. Samsung splits its smartphone unveilings into two events each year, and in February unveiled its Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+. The Galaxy Note line is Samsung's larger smartphone equipped with a stylus, and the Note 10's unveiling will come just about a month ahead of when we're expecting to see Apple's 2019 iPhone lineup. There were no details provided about the upcoming device, but Samsung says it is going to "unveil new devices designed to take the Galaxy ecosystem's connectivity to the next level." The event's invite features an S-Pen and a camera lens. Rumors and leaked design renders suggest the Galaxy Note 10 will feature 6.28 and 6.75-inch glass bodies (two sizes are rumored) with the same boxy design used in previous note devices. The front is said to feature an edge-to-edge display with a single center hole punch camera while the back is said to include a quad-camera setup. There are three traditional cameras (12-megapixel wide-angle, 12-megapixel ultra wide-angle, and 12-megapixel telephoto) along with a fourth time-of-flight 3D depth camera, which is a feature that rumors have indicated Apple will bring to the iPhone in 2020. It's also supposed to include an under-display fingerprint sensor like the Galaxy S10, and 5G variants may be offered as well. Samsung may also use its upcoming August event to provide more detail on when we can expect the delayed Galaxy Fold to launch. Samsung planned to release it earlier this year but then canceled its debut after multiple poor reviews from media sites. Samsung has also shown off a Bixby smart speaker several times, which is designed to compete with the HomePod. The Galaxy Home speaker has not yet launched and little has been said about it recently, but we could hear more at the Unpacked event. We don't know when Apple will unveil its own 2019 smartphone lineup, but based on past years, we can expect the Cupertino-based company to hold an event somewhere around the first or second week of September, with September 9 or September 10 being likely possible candidates. Apple plans to offer its 2019 iPhones in three sizes, identical to the current iPhone lineup. The two higher-end devices will continue to use OLED, while the iPhone XR successor will feature an LCD and a cheaper price tag. The iPhone XS and XS Max successors will use triple-lens cameras, while the XR successor will feature a dual-lens camera. The camera updates will be the biggest changes to the iPhones in 2019. No 5G connectivity is coming this year, but faster WiFi and LTE is expected, as are some neat little tweaks like bilateral wireless charging for charging AirPods and other devices with the iPhone. A much more substantial update with 3D cameras, new sizes, and 5G is expected in 2020. For more on the 2019 iPhones, make sure to check out our roundup.

Samsung profits likely fell 56% year-on-year; includes $683M Apple ‘fine’

Samsung profits for Q2 likely fell 56% year-on-year, warned the company today. The company has provided guidance of 6.5T Korean won ($5.6B). If accurate, as the company’s guidance usually is, that would make for the third quarter running that year-on-year profits have fallen.Samsung’s profits have suffered a triple-hit, say analysts …Samsung profits take triple-hitFirst, reports The Street, poor sales of flagship smartphones have combined with aggressive price promotions to keep mid-range ones afloat.“We assume weaker earnings for the mobile business led to softer-than-expected earnings for 2Q19,” said Daiwa Capital Markets analyst SK Kim. “Although we assume an increase in sales of smartphones (77m units, up 7% QoQ), weak sales of premium smartphones (GS10) and aggressive promotions for mid-end models such as the Galaxy A series, which is a lower-margin product, negatively impacted product mix and earnings in 2Q19.”Samsung has almost certainly been hit by the US blacklisting of Huawei products, as the Chinese company sources chips from Samsung. Weaker Huawei sales means reduced component orders. Finally, and partly related to this, CNBC reports that the overall market for mobile RAM and storage chips is poor, resulting in price cuts.Experts have said that the entire semiconductor sector is undergoing a period of inventory adjustment, which is keeping demand low and causing a supply glut that’s squeezing the price. Some have predicted continued excess inventories in both DRAM and NAND memory chips, which would push back the sector’s recovery to the second half of 2020.DRAM chips allow computers, phones and tablets to run multiple applications at the same time whereas NAND chips function as primary storage.Apple ‘fine’ provided some reliefThere was some relief for Samsung in the quarter: a one-off payment from Apple of some 800B won ($683M). As our sister site 9to5Mac recently reported, this was a penalty payment for Apple failing to buy the agreed number of iPhone displays from the company. The penalty goes back to Apple’s insistence that Samsung Display build a facility to exclusively manufacture OLED displays for the iPhone. Apple had told Samsung Display it would need 100 million OLED iPhone displays a year. But a slump in iPhone sales had a knock-on effect for Samsung Display, which saw its operating profits halve in a year, falling from 5.7 trillion won in 2017 to 2.62 trillion won in 2018.At the time, we knew the penalty had to be at least $170M, possibly more, but $683M is quite a chunk of change, and came in a quarter when Samsung really needed the cash.Mixed prospects aheadOne analyst said that Samsung profits should increase this quarter, thanks again in part to Apple.CLSA senior analyst Sanjeev Rana said the company’s earnings will likely recover in the second half. Already, operating profit in the second quarter was slightly higher than first-quarter numbers.“That should accelerate,” he said, referring to the third and fourth quarters. “It’s simply because of the seasonality, so we have new models coming from Apple as well as some other smartphone makers.”“In our earnings estimate, we are expecting (the) company’s earnings to recover 18% half-on-half in the second half,” he added. However, growing trade tensions between Japan and South Korea may constrain Samsung’s supply of raw materials going forward. There is a growing dispute between the two countries over wartime forced labor, which resulted in Japan announcing Monday stricter restrictions on exports of crucial high-tech materials that are used by South Korean electronics companies to make chips and smartphone displays […]Analysts at Citi said they expect this week’s ruling from Tokyo will “have limited short-term impact on Samsung and SK Hynix thanks to high inventory level, but (those companies) will face some difficulty in sourcing semiconductor materials soon.”

Samsung Galaxy Watch, Active get support for highly-customizable Pujie Black watchface

Design matters when it comes to the wearable on your wrist, and that extends to the watchface too. Pujie Black has been an excellent option for Wear OS users as far as a super-customizable watchfaces go, and with its latest update, the app is making its way to Samsung’s Galaxy Watch family.Revealed in a post over on Medium, Pujie Black v4.1 is adding official support for Samsung’s smartwatches including the Galaxy Watch, Watch Active, Galaxy Sport, and soon, the older Gear S3.Pujie Black for Galaxy Watch is powered by the same app from the Google Play Store that’s long been used for the Wear OS version. Notably, Galaxy Watch owners will need to be using the paid version of the app in order to use the watchface, and all of the customization settings are accessed on the connected smartphone. A triple-tap on the watchface itself allows for switching between presets. It is with great pride that we present the new version of Pujie Black. Starting version 4.1 Pujie Black is now available for Samsung Galaxy Watches (besides every possible Wear OS device out there)! The Tizen OS version has almost the exact same functionality as the Wear OS version and can be downloaded from the Galaxy Store for free. It requires authentication by the paid phone app, so there is currently no standalone version.Pujie Black’s phone app is available on the Google Play Store, and the Tizen app is now on the Galaxy Store.

Samsung Galaxy A90 5G Variant Spotted on Geekbench With Snapdragon 855 SoC, 6GB of RAM

The Samsung Galaxy A90 5G is said to sport a 4,500mAh batteryThe upcoming Samsung Galaxy A90 has been a pretty active contender in the rumour mill lately. According to reports and rumours, the Galaxy A90 will be packing quite a punch with key specifications and features including a Snapdragon 855 SoC under the hood, at least 6GB of RAM, a beefy battery, as well as a good set of cameras, to name a few. And if all these high-end flagship features were not enough, then the Galaxy A90 is also rumoured to have a 5G version of the handset alongside the 4G version. Separately, the alleged case of the Galaxy A90 was leaked, tipping a few details about its design.According to a report by SamMobile, a recent listing on the popular benchmarking platform, Geekbench, shows that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy A90 5G (SM-A908N) is indeed going to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC under the hood. Now, considering that 5G connectivity is only possible on a flagship chipset just like the Snapdragon 855 or an Exynos 9820, this will be a first for Samsung using a flagship-grade processor on a mid-range smartphone. Other than this, the listing also shows that the phone will be sporting 6GB of RAM.In a different report by Galaxy Club, the 5G version of the Galaxy A90 won't just stay limited to the South Korean market but it will also be available for a host of European countries. The European model number of the handset is SM-A908B. Galaxy Club also spotted a battery certification (EB-BA908BY) by Samsung, that shows that this upcoming 5G smartphone is going to sport a huge 4,500mAh battery. In a separate report by GSMArena, an alleged case of the Galaxy A90 has been listed on a Norwegian retailer, tipping the smartphone's design from both the front and the back. It can be seen that the smartphone has an edge to edge display with an under the screen fingerprint sensor. The rear is home to a triple rear camera setup with an LED flash. Additionally, there's a dark spot right at the top of the frame of the smartphone, that suggests the Galaxy A90 might sport a centre aligned pop-up selfie camera. Now all of this information is based on reports and rumours and nothing is official until it actually is. So, we'd recommend taking all this news with a pinch of salt. But if somehow all these rumours do turn out to be true, then the Samsung Galaxy A90 will surely give its competitors a tough fight as its turning out to be a pretty formidable mid-range smartphone. Now, it all depends on Samsung on how they price this smartphone.

Official Samsung renders for Galaxy Note 10+ and Watch Active 2 leak

With less than a month until the next Samsung Galaxy event, more and more details about the Note 10 have leaked. The latest shows official Samsung renders for the large phone and Watch Active 2, which will likely be announced alongside each other.Tweeted by Evan Blass this afternoon, we see the larger Galaxy Note 10+ in an angled shot that very clearly shows the flat top of the phone. Thanks to a colorful wallpaper, the centered Infinity-O hole-punch front-facing camera is particularly striking. However, due to the angle of this image, Samsung has cleverly obscured the top and bottom bezel that will be clearly visible when looking at the device head-on.Resting just on top of the screen is a blue/purplish S-Pen that fits the color scheme of the rest of the device. This is likely an official render from Samsung due to the diagonal Galaxy Note10+ text style.Meanwhile, @evleaks also shared a picture of the Watch Active 2. It is similar in style to a previous render leak for this wearable. However, we now see the rose gold case variant that’s matched with an equally pink elastic wristband. The notable visual difference from the original is how the top button is now elongated and pill-shaped rather than a circle like the bottom one. We see a simple analog watchface, while the screen still has a notable bezel.Given the matching render style, it’s very likely that the phone and watch will be announced together on August 7. Similar to the first Watch Active and Galaxy S10 earlier this year, this is a very aggressive wearable update cycle for Samsung.
